Anzak Newman 'Dugongs Seeking Shelter'
Acrylic on board with carved detail, 2024
60 x 120
This work depicts a herd of dugongs swimming away for rough seas. When the north west wind blows strong it makes the sea very rough. This makes the herd of dugongs seek shelter near islands, coastline and river systems. Hunters are well aware of seasonal occurrences and will hunt the dugong. This has been practiced by Indigenous people for many generations.
Exhibited in 'You & Me' exhibition @ UMI Arts Gallery, March 2024 - May 2024.
