Burruunh-burruunh is our language name for estuarine sharks. It also carries the meaning of belonging to the water — fresh or salt, because that’s where it belongs.
Estuarine sharks, like Bull sharks, live in both the sea and the freshwater estuary rivers. They’re known to hunt bait at the river mouths, right where the sea opens into the river, and they can travel a long way upstream. That’s the same area many of us like to fish. These sharks can grow very large and be aggressive at times. Estuarine sharks play a vital role in saltwater and freshwater ecosystems.
