Dorothy Edwards 'Nesting Season'
Reduction Linocut print on 350gsm acid free paper, 2023.
39.5 x 28 cm
This lino print is about the female crocodile when she lays her eggs. At this time she will lay her eggs in the mound and carefully cover them with more vegetation to keep them warm and protected. She then guards her nest fiercely, ensuring that no predators come near. The eggs will incubate for around 80 days before hatching, usually in late March or early April. Once the eggs hatch, the mother will carefully dig out the babies and help them make their way to the water. The young crocodiles are vulnerable at this stage and must quickly learn how to swim and hunt for food to survive. The mother will continue to protect and care for her offspring until they are old enough to fend for themselves.
Exhibited in 'The Summer Show' exhibition @ UMI Arts Gallery, November 2024 - February 2025.
