The weres (or weris) is a conical scoop made from thorny, fibrous plant material, with a circular, wide opening that tapers to a point at the other end. Traditional sardine fishing on Thursday Island and across the Torres Strait involves a specialized, hand-held, woven scoop known as a weris (or weres). These tools are used to catch tup (sardines), which often gather in large schools near the shore at high tide or on fringing reefs at low tide.
