Jijirr-nay is the Guugu Yimithirr word for all kinds of birds, and Walngga-wi means swamp or lagoon. During the wet season, the lagoons fill with water, and all the birds arrive. It’s their breeding time, and there’s plenty of food—berries, fish, insects, lilies, dragonflies, frogs, and worms. It’s a true sign of abundance. I love painting birds and I love my country. I also enjoy watching them. We also like hunting Magpie Geese and Torres Strait Pigeons. These birds can only be legally hunted in designated areas, as they are protected species. My kids and grandkids get them when the season opens, and we have a lovely feed.
