Nesting Season, 2022
Acrylic on canvas
40.5 x 30cm
Brolgas, like many birds, build and prepare their nest for their eggs and the hatchlings that will soon be arriving. Nesting season is from September to May. Brolgas build a nest out of sticks, grass and sedges in the middle of the wetlands. There are usually two eggs per clutch and both adults care for the incubating eggs. Once a territory has been established, brolgas will fiercely defend it. A pregnant woman, much like a brolga, goes through a ‘nesting’ phase as she cleans and prepares her home for the arrival of her new child. I have been through three nesting seasons and am a proud mother of three children who have grown into young adults choosing their own direction in life.
