When I was a young girl, my stepfather took the family camping to Little River, which is a saltwater river. In the 50s and 60s, my stepfather was a croc shooter. I brought a baby croc home once, and we kept it as a pet in the backyard – it had a little pond. We’d go up the sandpit, a freshwater lagoon at the beach, and go fishing for small fish to feed the croc. But one day someone left the gate open, and we followed the tracks to the big river. It was gone. 40 or 50 years later, there’s a big croc in that same river, we call him Charlie. I reckon that’s him. He’s probably about the same age as me.
