My mother grew up in a big family. Her mother, father, stepfather, brothers and sisters grew up on and around horses and mustering cattle, cooking in a stock camp and sleeping near a campfire. My mother was at her happiest on the back of a horse. My father would also become a horseman. Together, they would teach my brother and I to ride and we had horses in our big back yard when we were growing up. But we would never be as good a horseman or horsewoman as our mother or father. Dad’s love of campdrafting has kept him around horses for most of his life. Even in his 80’s, he is still riding his horses.
