Echidnas are remarkable monotremes, egg-laying mammals that use their sharp claws to dig their prey out of the ground. I have sculpted echidnas before, and each time I attempt to carve one from wood, I find the challenge invigorating. Reflecting on how Mother Nature inspires my work with wood fills me with gratitude. I cherish the gift that allows me to bring my family stories to light through the beauty of the wood. When I was a child, my grandfather taught me to carve wood. I feel confident and challenged when collecting and using storm-damaged wood. I love to leave symbols of what Mother Nature has already done on the wood, allowing it to show its unique natural signs. I love living here in Gimuy (Cairns) because rainforests and trees surround me. I find inspiration in the animals around me, feeling comfortable in everyday interactions with Mother Nature.
