Wanda Gibson 'Fish Trap'
Acrylic on Linen
101.6 cm x 76.6 cm x 3 cm
As a weaver,
I wanted to paint fish traps and share stories about my family.
I recalled the memories of my mother and aunts telling us about our ancestors and their methods for catching fish in the creeks and rivers.
They described how they wove fish traps from vines and sticks.
Once the nets were made, they would tie them across the creeks or rivers
to catch fish, and sometimes crayfish and turtles, in the freshwater areas.
This was how they fed their families, sharing the catch with other extended family members. It is important to share stories and practice our culture
so that the next generation can continue to pass on our knowledge.
Through my artworks, I strive to keep my culture alive
