Pandanus palms are tall, strong, and unique. Their sword-shaped leaves are arranged in a spiral pattern. They grow in tropical and subtropical coastal and island environments.
I have seen and photographed these mesmerising palms in many places I have lived and visited, including Weipa, Broome, the Gulf of Carpentaria, and between Cooya Beach and Gimuy (Cairns). On the many trips between Cooya Beach and Gimuy (Cairns), I have studied and been inspired to create the Pandanus palms in my art. I glance at them on the side of the road, with small waterfalls as backdrops, growing on their own or in clumps as I wait for the light to change, on the Captain Cook Highway due to the damage and devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper in 2023.
