"Dilly Bags" honours our connection to Country through the gathering of dye root and the making of string dilly bags. Sitting with Aunties on Country, stripping ribbon from cabbage palm fronds and rolling string is more than a practice — it is a time of learning, listening, and carrying forward the knowledge of our old people. Woven with cabbage palm string, these dilly bags are used by our people and hold not only food and materials, but also story, skill, and the strength of traditions passed down through generations.
For Kokoberrin people, these practices are part of living with Country, guided by care, purpose, and respect for what the land provides. The fibres of cabbage palm reflect the patience, skill, and resourcefulness of our people, while the act of gathering dye root carries its own stories of memory, belonging, and cultural continuity. A colour palette of red ochre, yellows, and aqua brings the work to life, reflecting the rich tones of country, plants, sky, and water. Through soft flowing forms and natural rhythm, the artwork honours these enduring traditions and the living presence of Country.
