Wanda Gibson 'Fish Trap III'
Acrylic on Linen
101.6 cm x 101.6 cm x 3 cm
I painted this Fish Trap in blue, as it reminds me of the stories my father told me about my ancestors who used to make traps at Cape Melville and set them at the mouth of the river. When the tide would go out, they would go catch spearfish, stingrays and sharks. The fish trap is made of small trees and tied with vines, which are cut with their stone axe, and the edge is sharpened with shells and sharp stones.
Exhibited in 'Freshwater Saltwater' exhibition @ UMI Arts Gallery, July 2024 - September 2024.
