Inspired by the practice of gathering shells along the beach, this work reflects
our connection to Country and a tradition our people have carried over millennia.
Walking the shoreline, we collect with care and purpose, guided by the knowledge
passed down from our old people and by a deep respect for the resources the sea
provides. For Kokoberrin people, gathering from the beach is more than an everyday
act — it is a way of living with Country, listening to its rhythms, and honouring the
gifts found along the water’s edge.
The shells gathered from the shore hold stories of movement, memory, and belonging, and are also used to make body adornments worn in ceremony, carrying beauty, cultural meaning, and connection to our homelands. A colour palette of blues, yellows, and purples brings the work to life, reflecting the shifting tones of sea, sand, sky, and shell. Through soft flowing forms and natural rhythm, the artwork honours these enduring traditions and the living presence of Country.
