This artwork draws inspiration from the Kokoberrin People, a freshwater community residing inland along the Nassau and Staaten River in Cape York. Renowned for our distinctive long, wavy hair and profound connection to the surrounding landscape, waterways, plants, and wildlife thriving in freshwater environments and waterways. This artwork incorporates shades of pink and yellow to symbolise the elegant lily flowers that adorn the lagoons. The circular motifs within the piece represent the gentle movement of water around clusters of lilies, while freshwater mussel shells and oval-shaped eggs (depicted in the artwork) symbolise the intricate ecosystem beneath the water’s surface. This artwork pays homage to our traditions and emphasises the profound significance of our connection to the land and waterways that sustain us. It serves as a visual tribute to the rich cultural heritage of our Kokoberrin People and the delicate balance of life within freshwater environments.

Exhibited in 'Freshwater Saltwater' exhibition @ UMI Arts Gallery, July 2024 - September 2024.
