Lisa Michl Ko-manggén (Middens)
- Acrylic on Canvas
- 120 x 170 x 4cm
Lisa belongs to the White Dingo clan of the Kokoberrin language group, with ancestral homelands known as Pinnarinch that stretch from Mudpalangen to the mouth of the Staaten River, encompassing the Barku, Nassau, and Lynd River regions on the central west coast of Cape York Peninsula.
Her latest creations blend layers of acrylic paint, gold pigment, and watercolour ink. These art mediums and techniques beautifully capture and reflect the art, stories, language, and traditions of her Kokoberrin culture.
The sunny gold pigment that forms the base of this artwork symbolises the natural resources found at significant sites throughout the homelands. In the background of her artwork, images of mussel shells and lotus flowers embellish the lagoons, with majestic dragonflies hovering in abundance. Dilly bags, traditionally used by Kokoberrin families, weave throughout the piece, layered with the shells found on middens that have accumulated over time from gatherings of families.
My artworks capture moments of happiness and joy on bright, sunny days in the land of my ancestors, celebrating and expressing gratitude.
